Vietnam reports 12,029 new COVID-19 cases

HANOI, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam reported 12,029 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, down 1,242 from Wednesday, according to its Ministry of Health.

The new infections, which were recorded in 59 provinces and cities, were all domestically transmitted.

The Vietnamese capital Hanoi remained the epidemic hotspot with 986 cases on Thursday, followed by the northern provinces of Phu Tho with 836 and Quang Ninh with 550.

Also on Thursday, local health authorities of the central highlands Dak Nong province reported 18,545 previously detected COVID-19 cases.

The infections brought the total tally to 10,533,164 with 42,982 deaths. Nationwide, as many as 9,076,927 COVID-19 patients, or 86 percent of the infections, have so far recovered.

Nearly 210.6 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in the country, including roughly 193.2 million shots on people aged 18 and above, said the ministry.

Vietnam has by far gone through four coronavirus waves of increasing scale, complication, and infectivity. As of Thursday, it has registered more than 10.5 million locally transmitted COVID-19 cases since the start of the current wave in April 2021, said the health ministry. Enditem
