TOKYO, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Rainy season has started in Tokyo and the surrounding Kanto-Koshin region, weather officials said on Monday, as the capital was drenched by downpours for most of the day.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said that from Monday morning, mostly clouds and rain are forecast for Tokyo and the surrounding region for the next week or slightly longer.
The weather agency also said that currently rain is falling from northeastern to western Japan.
The agency added that rain clouds are also developing over some parts of central Japan and the Amami region in Kagoshima Prefecture.
On Yoron Island in Amami, the JMA said that hourly rainfall of 29.5 mm was logged earlier on Monday.
The agency has also forecast intermittent downpours for the Kanto, Tohoku and Amami regions, with the latter, as well as the Izu Island area south of Tokyo, expected to see some 30 mm of rain per hour.
Up to 120 mm of rain is expected in Kanto-Koshin and Tokai by Tuesday morning, the JMA said, with 100 mm expected in Tohoku and 80 mm in southern Kyushu and Amami.
People in affected areas should remain vigilant for landslides and flooding in low-lying areas and where rivers may breach their banks, the weather agency warned. Enditem
