Three world records fall at FINA short-course world championships

MELBOURNE, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- The 16th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) on Saturday saw three world records fall at the Melbourne Aquatic and Sports Centre.

Australia dominated the women's 4x50m medley relay, lowering the world record to 1:42.35, beating the 1:42.38 set by the United States in 2018.

The United States took silver, trailing 0.06s behind, and the bronze went to Sweden in 1:42.43.

In the men's 4x50m medley relay, Italy set the second world record of the night in 1:29.72, while the United States and Australia grabbed silver and bronze medals respectively.

Another world record was broken in the semifinals of the women's 50m breaststroke, in which Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania posted a record-breaking 28.37.

China's Yan Zibei and Tang Qianting blasted the Asian records for men's and women's 50m breaststroke. Together with Qin Haiyang, the three Chinese swimmers will fight for gold in Sunday's showdowns.

After clinching a gold medal in the opening day's 1,500m freestyle, Gregorio Paltrinieri of Italy touched the wall first in the men's 800m freestyle, setting a new championship record of 7:29.99.

Henrik Christiansen of Norway finished second in 7:31.48, ahead of his French opponent Logan Fontaine who went 7:33.12 for bronze.

World record holder Seto Daiya once again proved his talent by winning the men's 400m individual medley title at 3:55.75, adding another gold for Japan.

Hali Flickinger of the United States stood atop the podium with her 4:26.51 in the women's 400m individual medley.

In the women's 50m freestyle, Emma McKeon of Australia finished first with a championship record time of 23.04, while in the men's event, Jordan Crooks of the Cayman Islands raced to the gold in 20.46. Enditem
