ATHENS, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- Greece and Bulgaria signed here on Thursday two memoranda of understanding (MoU) to further develop bilateral cooperation in the energy sector to benefit the wider region.

Under the first one, which concerns the security of supply and storage of natural gas, the energy companies of the two countries will be able to store gas at facilities in Bulgaria and Greece, according to an e-mailed press announcement from the Greek government.

Under the second memorandum, which concerns cooperation in oil, the two sides will explore the prospect of building a new pipeline that will connect the two hub ports of Alexandroupolis in Greece and Burgas in Bulgaria.

The memoranda signed by the energy ministers of the two countries will contribute to the implementation of an extensive energy network in the Balkans, in Europe and beyond, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a joint press statement with Bulgaria's President Rumen Radev.

"Greece and Bulgaria can become pillars of energy security for the wider region," Mitsotakis said.

This cooperation changes the energy map in Southeast Europe, opening new perspectives, Radev said.

During his stay in Athens, Radev also held talks with Greece's President Katerina Sakellaropoulou. Enditem
