JALALABAD, Afghanistan, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Two sisters were killed as a mortar mine left over from past wars went off in the Hisarak district of Afghanistan's eastern Nangarhar province on Tuesday, a local police officer Mohammad Amin said on Wednesday.

The deadly blast, according to the official, took place on Monday evening when the two working sisters were crossing a cemetery to reach their home in Kalagichina village of Hisarak district, but the explosive device exploded killing both on the spot.

A similar incident claimed the lives of two children in Kandahar province last week.

Afghanistan reportedly is one of the most mine-contaminated countries in the world as dozens of people, mostly children are killed and maimed every month due to blasts of unexploded devices left over from the past four decades of wars and civil conflicts. Enditem
