SEOUL, July 12 (Xinhua) -- The number of South Korea's fake banknotes rose in double digits in the first half, central bank data showed Wednesday.
The number of counterfeit banknotes, which were found by the Bank of Korea (BOK) or reported by individuals and financial institutions, came to 116 in the January-June period, up 17.2 percent compared to the first half of last year, according to the BOK.
It was attributed to higher face-to-face transactions following the eased measures against the COVID-19 pandemic.
The number of reported 5,000-won (3.9 U.S. dollars) fake bills was 73 in the first half, taking up 63.0 percent of the total.
Of the 72 counterfeit banknotes reported by financial institutions, 80.6 percent were found in the Seoul metropolitan area, the data showed. Enditem
