TOKYO, July 24 (Xinhua) -- A 37-year-old man was referred to prosecutors Monday on suspicion of attempted murder after three people were stabbed on a train in Japan's western prefecture of Osaka, local media reported.
The male perpetrator was arrested at the scene the previous day on suspicion of stabbing a 23-year-old man, who was in the same train car and a 79-year-old man and a 24-year-old conductor, who intervened in the incident, with the three sustaining minor injuries, according to Kyodo News.
The police will examine whether the suspect, Kazuya Shimizu, is mentally competent enough to be held criminally responsible for Sunday's attack, as he has told the police that he has a mental illness, said the report.
The station where the incident took place is situated near a large shopping mall and a hospital in Izumisano, Osaka prefecture. Enditem
