HANOI, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam welcomed more than 6.6 million international arrivals in the first seven months of this year, hitting 83 percent of the year's target but just equal to 67.5 percent of pre-pandemic levels, local media reported on Monday, citing the General Statistics Office (GSO).

During the period, foreign arrivals to Vietnam by air accounted for 87.6 percent of the total, followed by road with 11.6 percent and sea routes with 0.8 percent, local newspaper Vietnam News reported.

Most of the arrivals in the first seven months were from Asia, with around 75.8 percent, followed by tourists from Europe and the Americas, data showed.

The largest markets for Vietnam's tourism during the January-July period include South Korea, China and the United States.

South Korea remained the top source of tourist arrivals, with approximately 1.9 million visitors during the period, said the GSO, adding that nearly 737,600 Chinese tourists arrived during the same period, while the United States ranked third with over 445,400 arrivals.

Vietnam's top legislature has recently approved a looser electronic visa policy by tripling the time that foreign travelers are allowed to stay in the country to 90 days.

While the number of foreign tourists has not recovered to pre-pandemic figures, Vietnam is expected to reach its yearly target soon as the second half of the year is usually the peak time for international visitors, Vietnam News reported, citing the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism. Enditem
