WARSAW, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Slovenia men's volleyball team won over Poland in straight sets 25-21, 25-18, 25-21 in the opening match of the 2023 Hubert Wagner Memorial in Krakow, Poland on Friday.
Klemen Cebulj and Rok Mozic were the most prolific scorers, pouring in 17 points each for the winners, while Lukasz Kaczmarek delivered 10 points for Poland.
The visitors made a perfect start into the game and built a 9-5 lead on the scoreboard. The team led by Nikola Grbic reduced the gap to 17-16, but their opponents handled the pressure as Cebulj spiked effectively and Mozic delivered an ace to make it 25-21.
The hosts still had problems with their effectiveness after a short break. Slovenia controlled the game as they turned their fast counterattacks into points, and Gregor Ropret closed the second set with 25-18.
Poland could not respond well in the third set. Although they saved two match points, Tine Urnaut sealed Slovenia's victory.
Poland face France, while Slovenia encounter Italy on Saturday.
The Wagner Memorial is considered the largest volleyball friendly tournament in the world and the most important test for all participants before the 2023 CEV EuroVolley, which will start on Aug. 28. Enditem
