ANKARA, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- The Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MIT) killed a senior member of the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) in northern Syria, Türkiye's Anadolu news agency reported Thursday.

The YPG member, whose name was Zulfiye Binbir, was a "finance official" for the YPG in charge of the group's funds, the state-run news agency quoted anonymous security sources as saying.

She was located by the MIT operatives in Syria and "neutralized" in Rmelan, a town in northeastern Syria's al-Hasakah governorate.

Turkish authorities often use the term "neutralized" to imply that "terrorists" are killed, wounded, or captured in security operations.

Binbir joined the group in 1993 and had been on the most wanted list of the Turkish Interior Ministry, Anadolu reported.

Binbir was also accused of orchestrating the kidnapping of a Turkish soldier and a civil servant in 2011 in Türkiye. She stayed in Iraq between 1997-2004.

She was then appointed as a "commander" in the Ayn al-Arab District, north Syria's Aleppo governorate in 2018.

The Turkish intelligence recently intensified its cross-border operations in northern Iraq and Syria.

Ankara sees the YPG as the Syrian branch of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

The PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the United States, and the European Union, has been rebelling against the Turkish government for more than three decades. Enditem
