RIGA, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Latvian lawmakers on Wednesday elected Daiga Mierina of the Union of Greens and Farmers as the new parliament speaker.
Mierina, a former long-standing mayor of the Latvian municipality of Carnikava, was elected by 55 votes to 34.
Aleksejs Roslikovs, a candidate nominated by the opposition Stability party, lost the vote, as he was supported by the nine MPs of his own party.
The parliament had to elect a new speaker since the previous speaker was removed from office as a result of a recent coalition reshuffle. Enditem
