JERUSALEM, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- The 2024 European Water Polo Championships, men's and women's, originally scheduled to take place in January in the Israeli coastal city of Netanya, has been canceled due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The cancellation was announced in separate statements issued by the Israeli Water Polo Association and the European Aquatics on Thursday night.

The championship was supposed to take place between January 3 and 16 with the participation of 16 national teams in each gender.

"This is a difficult time for Israel, and unfortunately we had no choice but to cancel the championship," said the Israeli association.

The European statement said that following extensive meetings between European Aquatics and the Israeli Association, both institutions have agreed that it will be impossible to host in Netanya in January as planned.

The teams that would have reached the quarterfinals in Netanya were supposed to qualify for the 2024 World Aquatics Water Polo Championships that will be held in February in Doha, Qatar.

Therefore, the European Aquatics stated that different options are currently being investigated regarding the proper qualification procedure for the world championships. Enditem
