Security beefed up in Indian cities on New Year's Eve

NEW DELHI, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- Strict security arrangements have been made in major cities and towns across India on the New Year's Eve on Sunday, while revellers thronged pubs, bars, hotels and clubs to welcome 2024.

Deputy Commissioner of Police of Shahdara area of the national capital New Delhi Joy Tirkey said adequate police arrangements were made in the city in a bid to ensure people's safety till late in the night.

Strict security arrangements were made considering high risks posed by New Year revellers who indulge in drunken-driving and making nuisance at public places.

On Sunday evening, huge crowds were witnessed in Connaught Place area of central Delhi, amid huge police presence. Major shopping malls here were packed to the capacity.

Considering big crowds at public places, heavy police force was seen deployed in Delhi's Connaught Place area. Police-pickets were installed on roads, particularly in parts of central Delhi.

Fire fighting arrangements were also in full swing in Delhi.

In Mumbai, the country's financial hub, large crowds also gathered at clubs, hotels and bars to celebrate the New Year's Eve and welcome 2024. Enditem
