HANOI, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam's health ministry has urged local authorities to strengthen medical supervision at border gates amid increasing travel and trade exchanges ahead of Lunar New Year, local media reported Friday.

Amid the COVID-19 resurgence with new variants and a rising number of influenza cases in many countries, the General Department of Preventive Medicine under the health ministry has urged international disease control centers at localities to constantly update the epidemic development to timely apply preventive measures at border gates.

The centers have been asked to strictly monitor, early diagnose and quarantine those with suspected symptoms at border gates, especially during holidays.

In Vietnam, the climate in the north has enabled the spread of several contagious diseases, especially respiratory. In the last two weeks hospitals in Hanoi have received patients of all ages, mostly with the flu, some ill enough to require ventilation, VnExpress reported.

The National Hospital of Pediatrics has been receiving 100-150 children with the flu every day, with 15 percent requiring hospitalization. Enditem
