TOKYO, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- Core consumer inflation in Japan's capital Tokyo in January cooled below 2 percent for the first time since March 2022, marking the third consecutive month of easing, government data showed Friday.
The core consumer price index (CPI), which excludes volatile fresh food prices but includes fuel costs, in the capital's densely populated 23 wards rose 1.6 percent in January from a year earlier, compared with a 2.1 percent rise in December, the internal affairs ministry said.
The pace of consumer price growth in Tokyo, considered a leading indicator of nationwide inflation trends, slowed below the Bank of Japan's 2 percent inflation target for the first time in 20 months, underscoring policymakers' view that "cost-push" pressures will continue to ease in coming months.
A deeper measure of the inflation trend that strips away both fresh food and fuel prices, closely watched by the central bank as a gauge of broader price trends, rose 3.1 percent in January after increasing 3.5 percent in December, logging the fifth month of slowing gains, the data also showed.
