VIENTIANE, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- Lao medical workers require more training in non-communicable diseases to improve the treatment of chronically ill patients, according to a senior official from the Lao Ministry of Health.

Lao Deputy Minister of Health Snong Thongsna made the statement on Tuesday when addressing a workshop on non-communicable disease management and community engagement, according to a report issued on Friday from the Center of Information and Education for Health under the Lao Ministry of Health.

The workshop, held in Lao capital Vientiane from Tuesday to Wednesday, marked the start of joint efforts to develop a non-communicable disease management plan to strengthen the health system and increase the capacity of health workers and health volunteers.

To determine appropriate disease control policies, Laos' Ministry of Health has coordinated with the World Health Organization to create a service manual to be used in the treatment and control of non-communicable diseases in primary care settings, said Snong. Enditem
