BUJUMBURA, Burundi, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- At least nine people, including six women and a soldier, were killed on Sunday night in Buringa village in the province of Bubanza, near the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), in a terrorist attack, the Burundian government said Monday.
RED-Tabara rebels carried out the attack, which also injured five people, said Jerome Niyonzima, the Burundian government's secretary-general and spokesman.
The rebels also targeted the office of the ruling CNDD-FDD party in the region.
On the X platform, formerly Twitter, RED-Tabara claimed responsibility for the attack, saying that they targeted two military posts in Buringa on Sunday night, resulting in the deaths of six soldiers, the destruction of the CNDD-FDD party office, and the seizure of firearms and ammunition.
RED-Tabara is a rebel group based in eastern DRC and has been battling Burundi's government since 2015. Enditem
