JAKARTA, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Former Indonesian Agriculture Minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo was charged on Wednesday with extortion and receiving gratifications worth a total of 44.5 billion rupiah (around 2.8 billion U.S. dollars) when he was in office from 2020 to 2023.

During a hearing at the Corruption Crimes Court in Jakarta, the Prosecutor Masmudi said Limpo had ordered his staff to collect funds from subordinate officials for personal and family interests under threat of dismissal.

"The defendant also asked for each secretariat, directorate and agency in the Agriculture Ministry to allocate 20 percent of their budget to him," said Masmudi, local media reported.

Limpo carried out this action together with former Director of Agricultural Equipment and Machinery Muhammad Hatta, and former Secretary General Kasdi Subagyono.

The three of them were charged with violating the Law on the Eradication of Corruption Crimes and the Criminal Code (KUHP). Enditem
