MEXICO CITY, Feb. 29 (Xinhua) -- Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Thursday inaugurated the newest tract of the Maya Train, which connects the resorts of Cancun and Playa del Carmen, in the southeast state of Quintana Roo.
At his daily press conference, the president said the Maya Train, one of his administration's flagship infrastructure projects, will help promote some of the country's lesser known Maya cities and "the wonders" of the states of Campeche, Chiapas, Tabasco and Yucatan, in addition to Quintana Roo.
"So many people from all over the world come to Cancun, we are talking about 350 flights a day landing at Cancun airport and coming to paradise, to the Caribbean Sea," said Lopez Obrador.
The Cancun-Playa tract, known as section 5 North of the Maya Train, comprises 45.6 kilometers of electrified double track and has the capacity to carry up to 2,210 passengers per trip with four-car trains, according to the Mexican government.
This segment will also have intermodal connections to terminals and archeological sites.
The Maya Train route comprises a total of 1,554 kilometers and seeks to spur development in the southeast of the country. Enditem
