WINDHOEK, April 6 (Xinhua) -- A vibrant spectacle unfolded on Saturday in Namibia's capital Windhoek, as crowds flooded the streets to mark the commencement of the Windhoek Karneval (WIKA), celebrating an impressive 70-year journey with a burst of color, music, and tradition.

Under the theme "Applause, applause, full throttle ahead," the carnival encapsulated boundless joy and excitement.

The 10-day extravaganza which began April 4, officially opened to the public on Saturday with the traditional street procession known as 'Umzug,' setting the stage for a series of events showcasing Namibia's rich culture.

"It's an experience unlike any other, where cultures collide, and traditions unite to create memories that last a lifetime," said WIKA President Holger Mentzel.

Supported by local firm Ohlthaver & List Group, Executive Chairman Sven Thieme emphasized WIKA's role in uniting diverse communities, championing freedom of expression, and fostering unity.

He underscored the event's significance in enriching Windhoek's cultural landscape and promoting inclusivity, joy, and the vibrant spirit of Namibia.

"We believe that WIKA not only enriches the cultural tapestry of Windhoek but also serves as a powerful platform for promoting inclusivity, joy, and the vibrant spirit of our beloved Namibia. It is our privilege to support this iconic event that continues to inspire and unite people from all walks of life," he said. Enditem
