MADRID, May 16 (Xinhua) -- The Spanish National Police announced on Thursday the dismantling of the infrastructure of the Mexican Sinaloa Cartel in Spain during an operation resulting in the seizure of 1,800 kilograms of methamphetamines.
The operation, marking the second biggest drug seizure in Europe, was "very laborious and extremely important" due to the "great security measures taken" by the drug transporters, Marcelino Fernandez, the head of the Judicial Police Brigade said in a press conference broadcast by on Spanish state TV network RTVE.
Police raids in Tenerife (Canary Islands), Madrid, Valencia and Alicante (eastern Spain), were instrumental in disrupting a key supply route for synthetic drugs into Europe. The raids resulted in the arrest of three Spanish citizens, a Romanian and a Mexican, and the leader of the network was among those detained, the police confirmed.
The investigation began in early 2023 after authorities uncovered a Tenerife-based criminal group involved in smuggling cocaine from mainland Spain to the Canary Islands. According to the National Police, surveillance and follow-up operations revealed that the drugs were distributed from a property in a remote part of the Valencia region.
In addition to the drug seizure, law enforcement also confiscated five vehicles, communication equipment, documents, a detonating weapon and cash. The operation remains ongoing, with the possibility of further arrests. Enditem
