NEW DELHI, May 21 (Xinhua) -- As many as 36 flamingos have been found dead near India's financial capital hub Mumbai, a local forest official confirmed on Tuesday.
According to media reports, the flamingos died after being hit by a passenger flight which landed safely at the Mumbai airport and was grounded for a thorough inspection.
The incident reportedly occurred late on Monday night.
An online report by "India Today" quoted additional chief conservator of forests (Mangrove protection cell) S.Y. Rama Rao as saying that 36 bodies of flamingos were found and a search was launched to find if more flamingos were killed.
Construction activities near wetlands, particularly the installation of high-voltage power transmission lines, was blamed for the incident.
An official working with the non-governmental organization "Vanashakti," which works for environment conservation, said over phone that a lot of construction activities have been witnessed in the wetlands which have been a home for the flamingos for several years.
"As a result of construction activities, the flamingos feel disturbed. This flock of flamingos might have attempted to fly towards Thane Creek and, in the process met with the accident," added the source. Enditem
