TUNIS, May 27 (Xinhua) -- A maritime exercise kicked off in the Gulf of Tunis on Monday to enhance the country's maritime search and rescue capabilities, the Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP) reported.

The exercise, which is scheduled to continue until Wednesday, will focus on search and rescue at sea, Mehdi Seliti, head of the National Search and Rescue Operations Coordination Center, was quoted as saying during a ceremony at the La Goulette naval base in the northern suburbs of Tunis, the capital of Tunisia.

The objective of the exercise, dubbed "Safe Sea 24," is to evaluate the effectiveness of the existing system and identify its strengths and weaknesses in order to address any shortcomings, Seliti added.

Additionally, the exercise aims to establish coordination mechanisms among relevant stakeholders, refine first relief techniques through practice, and optimize the use of available systems, as reported by TAP. Enditem
