AMMAN, May 28 (Xinhua) -- The 23rd edition of the "Chinese Bridge" Chinese proficiency competition for college students in Jordan concluded its finals on Tuesday at the Philadelphia University in Jordan.

Ten contestants from the University of Jordan, Philadelphia University in Jordan, Yarmouk University, and the Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Confucius Institute competed in the finals, showcasing their Chinese language skills through speeches, knowledge tests, and talent performances.

Hazem Al-Masri, representing the Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Confucius Institute, secured first place. Fawzia Hammo from the University of Jordan won second place. The winners will represent Jordan at the global finals of the competition in Beijing.

The competition was co-organized by the Amman Chinese Cultural Center and Philadelphia University, with the support of the Chinese Embassy in Jordan.

Chinese Ambassador Chen Chuandong emphasized the importance of language exchange in fostering cultural understanding.

"Through the Chinese language, we can explore the interaction between Chinese and Arab civilizations and strive for mutual understanding and integration of hearts and minds," said Chen in his opening remarks.

Chen highlighted the growing popularity of Chinese language learning in Jordan, with over 1,000 students enrolled in the country's two Confucius Institutes and seven Chinese language programs.

Philadelphia University President Abdullah Al-Jarrah echoed the sentiment, calling the competition a "bridge between languages and cultures," enabling deeper connections and mutual respect between the Chinese and Jordanian people.

The first-place winner, Al-Masri, expressed gratitude to his teachers and his determination to continue honing his Chinese skills for the global finals.

He also noted the positive rapport between China and Jordan, highlighting numerous parallels between Chinese and Arab cultures, adding that he aspired to pursue a career in diplomacy to bolster and enhance Chinese-Jordanian relations. Enditem
