COLOMBO, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Steps will be taken to immediately remove all unauthorized constructions that contribute to flooding in Sri Lanka's capital Colombo and its suburbs, Secretary of the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing W.S. Sathyananda said Monday.

Addressing a press conference held at the Department of Government Information, he said a circular will be issued to all government institutions to announce the decision within two weeks.

He added that authorities must conserve wetlands in Colombo and its surrounding areas in efforts to control floods.

Sathyananda said a lot of small waterways and drainage systems have been blocked and this is a significant cause of flooding, adding that the unauthorized structures will be removed to address this issue. Enditem
