HANOI, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam witnessed a surge in imported car sales in the first five months of this year, surpassing domestically-assembled vehicles, Vietnam News Agency reported Wednesday, citing the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA).

Imported cars saw an 8 percent increase in consumption while domestically assembled cars' sales declined by 14 percent during the cited period.

In May alone, over 11,900 domestically assembled cars were sold in the market, an increase of 0.02 percent while imported cars' sales surged by 12 percent with 13,809 units sold, according to VAMA.

Four out of the top 10 best-selling car models in Vietnam last month were completely imported from abroad, including the Toyota Yaris Cross, Mitsubishi Xforce, Toyota Innova Cross, and the Ford Everest, local media Vietnamnet reported.

The anticipated 50 percent reduction in registration fees, which is poised to come into effect later in 2024, is expected to boost domestic car purchases and revitalize the Vietnamese automotive market after a sluggish start to the year. Enditem
