NIAMEY, July 5 (Xinhua) -- The transitional president of Burkina Faso, Ibrahim Traore, arrived in Niamey Friday afternoon for a summit with leaders of Niger and Mali.

Traore, who was welcomed by his Nigerien counterpart Abdourahamane Tchiani at the Diori Hamani International Airport, will take part in the first summit of the Alliance of Sahel States on Saturday morning, local media reported.

The meeting, also to be attended by Assimi Goita, the interim president of Mali, will discuss issues and challenges common to the three countries: security and defense; the fight against terrorism; and economic, cultural and commercial exchanges.

Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger created the Alliance of Sahel States, a mutual defense pact, in September 2023, and announced their withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States early this year. Enditem
