PHNOM PENH, July 7 (Xinhua) -- The Electricity Authority of Cambodia (EAC) said on Sunday that rooftop solar power installers with a capacity above 10 kilowatts are obliged to pay capacity charges.

In a statement, the EAC said all rooftop solar power consumers who have also used the national power grid are required to register their rooftop solar power installations with state-owned utility Electricite du Cambodge, or they will face penalties.

It added that since December 2023 to date, only 94 users have declared their rooftop solar power installations.

The EAC said the capacity charges target large consumers such as industrial plants, businesses, hotels or large buildings that want to install medium and large solar power systems.

"For households who install a rooftop solar power system with a power of not more than 10 kilowatts in equivalent to 16 large solar panels or 20 medium solar panels on their rooftops sized from 120 to 200 square meters, they will not be required to pay the capacity charges," the statement said.

"Therefore, more than 95 percent of the people who have used electricity for their homes and business locations will not be affected by this new measure," it added.

According to the statement, rooftop solar power consumers who have not used the national power grid are also not obliged to pay the capacity charges.

The statement did not say how much the capacity fee will be applied to the consumption of a kilowatt hour of solar electricity. Enditem
