RAMALLAH, July 16 (Xinhua) -- A Palestinian man was shot dead on Tuesday by the Israeli army during a raid in the central West Bank, Palestinian sources said, while Israeli sources accused him of trying to carry out a stabbing attack against soldiers.

Ahmad Sultan, 20, was killed after being hit by live bullets in Al-Bireh city during clashes that erupted following the raid, Palestinian sources told Xinhua.

Sultan arrived at the hospital dead after he was shot directly in the chest and abdomen.

Local sources said Sultan, originally from the Gaza Strip, lived in the Al-Balou area of Al-Bireh.

Meanwhile, the Hebrew Public Radio Kan reported that the security forces killed a Palestinian in Al-Bireh city after he ran towards them holding a knife and stabbed one of the soldiers.

The radio said the stabbed soldier sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Israeli forces also raided the cities of Jericho, Tubas, Hebron, and Tulkarm, and stormed exchange shops there amid clashes with Palestinian gunmen in Tubas and Qalqilya.

Israel usually described these raids as "counter-terrorism operations" targeting "terrorists" linked to Palestinian armed groups.

The West Bank has been witnessing escalating tension marked by armed confrontations between Israeli troops and Palestinians in cities, villages, and camps since the start of the Israel-Hamas conflict in the Gaza Strip on Oct. 7 last year. Enditem
