SAN FRANCISCO -- A massive wildfire in the U.S. state of Oregon has grown rapidly to some 600 square miles (1,554 sq km), an area more than half the size of Rhode Island's land mass, officials said on Friday.

The Durkee Fire, sparked by lightning on July 17, is the largest blaze in the United States so far. Officials said the fire was only 20 percent contained on Friday. (U.S.-Oregon-Wildfire)

ADDIS ABABA -- The Ethiopian parliament on Friday declared a three-day national mourning for 257 citizens who lost their lives after deadly landslides hit a remote village in southern Ethiopia.

LONDON -- A police officer is under criminal investigation after being filmed kicking and stamping on a man's head at Manchester Airport earlier this week, Britain's police complaints watchdog said on Friday.

The Greater Manchester Police (GMP) officer was caught on camera by an onlooker kicking and stamping on a man who was lying face down on the ground at the airport during an arrest on Tuesday evening, leading to accusations of police brutality and two nights of protests later in the week.
