BEIJING, July 28 (Xinhua) -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) held multiple high-profile events in Pyongyang Saturday to commemorate the 71st anniversary of the country's victory in the Fatherland Liberation War. Kim Jong Un, general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) and president of the State Affairs of the DPRK, was in attendance, state media said Sunday.

A meeting with the war veterans was held in the DPRK capital on Saturday, featuring a major speech by Ri Il Hwan, member of the Political Bureau and secretary of the Central Committee of the WPK, and oath-taking speeches by representatives from the Korean People's Army, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported.

During the speech, Ri paid high tribute to the martyrs who had fallen in the war for defending the country and extended heartfelt thanks and best wishes to the war veterans, the KCNA said.

On Saturday evening, Pyongyang also hosted a commemorative march featuring symbolic columns of military units from the Fatherland Liberation War and a grand performance celebrating the war victory, KCNA report. Enditem
