TOKYO -- Toyota Motor Corp. sold 5.16 million vehicles worldwide in the first half of 2024, retaining the top spot in global sales for the fifth consecutive year, data released by the Japanese automaker showed Tuesday.

In the January-June period, the group's global sales, including those of its small-car manufacturing unit Daihatsu Motor Co. and truck-making subsidiary Hino Motors Ltd., fell 4.7 percent from a year earlier but still eclipsed 4.35 million units sold in the same period by German rival Volkswagen AG. NEW DELHI -- At least two people were killed and 20 others injured after 18 coaches of a passenger train derailed Tuesday in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand, officials said.

The accident took place in the morning hours near Barabamboo station of Chakradharpur in West Singhbhum district, about 123 km southeast of Ranchi, the capital city of Jharkhand. (India-Train Derailment-Death)

NEW DELHI -- The death toll in Tuesday's multiple landslides in India's southern state of Kerala further rose to 95, with more than 110 people injured, a local police officer told Xinhua over phone.

At least three massive landslides struck the Meppadi area of Kerala's Wayanad district at around 02:00 a.m. local time when the people were asleep. Those injured were admitted to a local hospital. (India-Landslides-Death)

HANOI -- Five miners were buried in a coal mine landslide on Monday night in Ha Long city, Vietnam's northern province of Quang Ninh, Vietnam News Agency reported.

SEOUL -- South Korea's economically active elderly population hit a record high this year amid the rapidly aging population, statistical office data showed Tuesday.
