MANILA, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- The unemployment rate in the Philippines dropped to 3.1 percent in June from 4.1 percent in May, the lowest rate in nearly two decades, the government said Wednesday.

Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) head Dennis Mapa said at a press conference that there were 1.62 million jobless Filipinos in June this year.

"This was lower than the number of unemployed persons in June 2023 at 2.33 million and May 2024 at 2.11 million," Mapa said, adding the June unemployment rate is one of the lowest since April 2005.

According to the PSA, the jobless rate in June 2023 was 4.5 percent.

National Economic and Development Authority Secretary Arsenio Balisacan said the jobless rate in June matches the record low set in December 2023, "marking the lowest unemployment rate in nearly two decades."

"The government is intensifying its strategies to create high-quality job opportunities for Filipinos, as the country's labor market remains robust and resilient, hitting a record-low unemployment rate in June 2024," Balisacan said. Enditem
