OSLO, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Two Norwegian satellites have been launched from California in the United States to provide broadband coverage across the Arctic region, the Norwegian government announced on Monday.

The satellites, which were launched at 4:02 Norwegian time (0202 GMT) on Monday morning, were carried into space by a SpaceX rocket. The project is spearheaded by Space Norway, a state-owned Norwegian company.

"This is a significant milestone for Norway. The launch marks our largest space project to date and will greatly benefit all activities conducted in the Arctic," Trade and Industry Minister Cecilie Myrseth said in a statement.

The satellites should deliver reliable broadband coverage, and enhance communication capabilities in the Arctic, a region that has struggled with inconsistent service. The improved connectivity will be important for aircraft, research and fishing vessels, cruise ships, coast guards, and expeditions operating in the Arctic, according to the statement. Enditem
