SAN JOSE, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Argentine coach Claudio Vivas has been appointed interim manager of Costa Rica after the resignation of compatriot Gustavo Alfaro, the Central American country's football federation said on Monday.

Vivas will be in charge of Los Ticos for their Confederation of North, Central America and the Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) Nations League fixtures in September and October.

"We appreciate that you accept this challenge, congratulate you and wish you the greatest success because your success will be the success of all," Costa Rica federation president Osael Maroto said after a meeting of the entity's executive committee.

Vivas has had spells in charge of Argentinos Juniors, Racing Club and Banfield, among other clubs, in a managerial career spanning more than three decades.

The 56-year-old has also worked as an assistant coach with Argentina's national as well as Spanish clubs Espanol and Athletic Bilbao.

Alfaro stepped down last week following Costa Rica's group-stage exit from the Copa America in June and July.

He led Los Ticos to five wins, two draws and four losses after taking charge of the team last November. Enditem
