COLOMBO, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) officially has issued a telecommunications service provider license to Starlink Lanka (Private) Limited, the President's Media Division (PMD) said in a statement on Tuesday.

The TRCSL license enables Starlink Lanka to offer satellite broadband services across the South Asian country, which came into effect on Monday, the PMD said.

The development follows a recent meeting between President Ranil Wickremesinghe and businessman Elon Musk in Indonesia during the 10th World Water Forum, the PMD said, adding that during the meeting, Wickremesinghe and Musk discussed expediting the application process to connect Sri Lanka to Musk's Starlink network.

Starlink, a satellite internet service, is owned and operated by U.S. aerospace company SpaceX. Musk said the service is providing coverage to about 100 countries. Enditem
