KABUL, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- The first-ever fumigation center opened in south Afghanistan's Kandahar province on Sunday as part of efforts to fight plants' diseases and safeguard the dry and fresh fruits from infections, provincial head for the Chamber of Commerce and Investment Mohammad Sediq Mohmand said.

Built for 50 million afghanis (about 704,000 U.S. dollars), the newly-inaugurated facility, Fumigation and Quarantine Pest Control Center, is expected to check the plants' diseases in the gardens in Kandahar and its vicinity.

Kandahar is famous for its pomegranate gardens, vineyards and other fruit gardens.

Mohmand noted that similar fumigation centers would be built in nine more provinces including the northern Balkh and the western Herat provinces.

In the meantime, the managing director of the fumigation center Attaurahman said that the center has provided job opportunities for some 400 people directly and indirectly in Kandahar. Enditem
