MEXICO CITY, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Foreign direct investment (FDI) in Mexico hit a record of 31.096 billion U.S. dollars in the first half of the year, authorities said on Sunday.

The preliminary figure marks a 7 percent increase compared to a year ago when it totaled 29.041 billion dollars, Mexico's Economy Ministry said in a statement, noting that the FDI set "a new record high for the period since records have been kept."

In the second quarter of the year, FDI came from 2,787 Mexican companies with the participation of foreign capital, 1,977 trust contracts and 28 foreign corporations, according to the ministry's data.

Of the total, 30.3 billion dollars came from the reinvestment of profit, while new investment reached more than 900 million dollars and intercompany accounts showed a deficit of 101 million dollars.

FDI performance "suggests an adequate degree of liquidity among companies to cover debts acquired in previous years and to make loans to companies belonging to their corporate group," said the statement. Enditem
