AMMAN, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Jordan's state-owned Aqaba Development Corporation signed an agreement on Monday with an international consortium to develop the Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Aqaba, at a total cost of 125 million U.S. dollars.

The agreement, signed by Hussein Safadi, CEO of the Aqaba Development Corporation, and representatives of the consortium, includes the construction of an onshore regasification unit and upgrading the existing LNG terminal, the state-run Petra news agency reported.

According to Safadi, the new facilities would be capable of converting up to 700 million cubic feet of liquefied natural gas per day from its stored liquid state into compressed natural gas, and the project is expected to be completed within 22 months.

The project is not only critical for enhancing the terminal system in Aqaba but also for ensuring the security of Jordan's energy supply, Safadi said. Enditem
