JERUSALEM -- The bodies of six Israeli hostages were recovered during an overnight operation in the Khan Younis area of Gaza, Israeli officials said on Tuesday.

In a joint statement, the Israel Defense Forces and the Shin Bet, Israel's domestic security agency, identified the victims as Yagev Buchshtab, Alexander Dancyg, Avraham Munder, Yoram Metzger, Nadav Popplewell, and Haim Perry, and said their families have been notified. (Israel-Gaza-Hostages)

GAZA -- At least nine Palestinians were killed, and others were wounded in an Israeli airstrike on a school sheltering displaced people in Gaza City, Palestinian security and medical sources said Tuesday.

The Israeli army targeted the Mustafa Hafez school in the al-Rimal neighborhood, which is sheltering hundreds of displaced families, killing and injuring some of its residents, according to the Gaza-based Palestinian Civil Defense. (Gaza Strip-Hamas-Israel)

TOKYO -- Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) decided Tuesday to hold its presidential election on Sept. 27 to select a successor to Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, local media reported.

The upcoming election, the first since 2021 when Kishida was elected party's leader, is expected to see about a dozen lawmakers vie for the post to succeed Kishida, with the winner to be anointed prime minister given the ruling coalition controls both houses of parliament, Kyodo News reported. KIEV -- A fuel and lubricants storage facility caught fire in Ukraine's western Ternopil region early Tuesday after a Russian strike, with initial information saying there were no casualties, the regional authorities said.

The projectile fired by Russian forces hit the storage depot in the city of Ternopil at about 3 a.m. local time (about 2359 GMT), according to the Ternopil Regional Military Administration. (Ukraine-Russia-Fire) Enditem
