ULAN BATOR, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- The World Women's Forum themed "Towards a Green Future" kicked off here on Thursday, focusing on women's empowerment, gender equality, climate change, and the effective implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Under the auspices of Mongolian President Ukhnaa Khurelsukh, the forum was co-organized by Mongolia's presidential office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the United Nations.

"Despite more than half of the SDGs implementation period having passed, progress on Goal 5, gender equality, remains insufficient. Research by the International Monetary Fund shows that many countries still impose legal barriers to women's economic participation, and women are underrepresented in decision-making roles," Khurelsukh stated at the opening ceremony.

"As of June, women lead 26 countries, hold 26.5 percent of parliamentary seats, and occupy 22 percent of ministerial positions. They are also overrepresented in informal and unpaid work and earn about 12 percent less than men on average," Khurelsukh said, noting that it is estimated that achieving full gender equality could boost the global economy by 23 percent.

"Women's roles and participation are crucial for the harmony, prosperity, and well-being of any nation. Their contributions, especially those of female leaders, are essential for maintaining global peace, achieving the SDGs, and building a just and compassionate society," he added.

Hundreds of Mongolian female leaders from fields such as business, sports, and arts, leaders and representatives from countries and international organizations attended the forum, according to the organizers.

During the two-day event, attendees are expected to hear presentations and engage in discussions on topics including the role of women leaders in environmental initiatives, shaping sustainable food systems, the impact of women entrepreneurs in the e-economy, gender equality in the economy, the influence of education on empowering women and girls, and gender equality in sports, arts, and culture.
