PARIS, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- France's year-on-year consumer price index (CPI) is expected to rise by 1.9 percent in August, the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) said on Friday.

After increasing by 2.3 percent yearly in July, inflation in France falls below the 2 percent benchmark for the first time since August 2021, according to a preliminary report published by INSEE.

"This decrease in inflation should be explained by the very clear slowdown in energy prices," the institute noted. Over the year as a whole, petroleum product prices should fall and electricity prices should slow, it added.

In July, energy prices rose by 8.5 percent yearly while they should only rise by 0.5 percent in August, INSEE said.

However, prices of services should increase by 3.1 percent in August compared with the 0.5 percent growth in July, due to the Olympics being held in Paris. The event has pushed up hotel and transport prices in the capital, according to the French daily Le Figaro. Enditem
