JAKARTA, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia kicked off on Tuesday the 44th ASEAN Railway CEO Conference in Bandung, West Java province, showcasing the success story of Whoosh Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Train as the first of its kind in Southeast Asia.
Indonesian Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi conveyed how the Whoosh had become a new pride of ASEAN, calling other ASEAN counterparts to jointly develop urban mass transportation, especially the rail-based ones.
"We all know that the Whoosh high-speed train has become our pride, not only in our homeland but also in ASEAN due to its speed and neatness," Sumadi said in a press conference after the opening ceremony, adding that the ASEAN Railway CEO Conference was expected to provide valuable input for the development of the ASEAN transportation sectors, especially in railways.
The ASEAN Railway CEO Conference will be held until Thursday and is aimed at strengthening relationships and cooperation between railway operators and industry players in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Didiek Hartantyo, CEO of Indonesia's state-owned railway operator PT KAI, said on the sidelines of the conference that the event was expected to result in solutions urgently needed to address climate change, improve operational efficiency, and meet the growing demand for more sustainable transportation options.
