SARAJEVO, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- The Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) on Tuesday approved the country's accession to the EU4Health program.

The ministers ratified an agreement with the European Union (EU) to join the program, signed on July 23 in Brussels by BiH Minister of Civil Affairs Dubravka Bosnjak and European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Stella Kyriakides.

Under the agreement, EU4Health will provide BiH with 5.3 billion euros (5.8 billion U.S. dollars) of funding from 2021 to 2027, representing the largest amount of financial support BiH has received under any EU health initiative.

Bosnjak said the agreement will significantly enhance the country's healthcare system, and align it with European standards. This will help BiH to address health challenges more effectively, Bosnjak added, and to improve the overall quality of healthcare for its citizens.

The EU4Health program is aimed at helping EU member states to "strengthen the resilience of their health systems and promote innovation in the health sector", with a vision of a "European Health Union," according to the European Commission. Enditem
