MANILA, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- The unemployment rate in the Philippines rose to 4.7 percent in July from 3.1 percent in June this year, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said Friday.

The total number of unemployed individuals in July 2024 was registered at 2.38 million, PSA head Dennis Mapa said at a press conference.

The number of unemployed Filipinos in July this year was higher than the estimated number of unemployed persons of 2.29 million in July 2023, Mapa said. There were 1.62 million jobless Filipinos in June this year.

Mapa attributed the increase in July to joblessness among the youth aged 15 to 24.

"There were 1.02 million jobless youth in July, contributing 43 percent of the total 2.38 million unemployed persons during the month," he said. Enditem
