ISLAMABAD, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan on Friday celebrated its 59th Defense Day anniversary to commemorate the sacrifices of fallen heroes who defended the South Asian country.

The day started with a 31-gun salute in the country's capital, Islamabad, and a 21-gun salute in provincial capitals, followed by prayers, wreath-laying ceremonies at the tombs of martyrs, and special prayers in mosques for the progress and prosperity of the country.

A smartly turned-out contingent of the Pakistan Air Force presented the guard of honor and assumed guard duties at the mausoleum of the founder of Pakistan, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, in the southern port city of Karachi.

On the occasion, the Inter-Services Public Relations, the media wing of the Pakistan Army, said in a statement that the Pakistan Armed Forces reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to defending the country against all threats and challenges, adding, "We, along with law enforcement agencies, stand ready to defend our homeland with unwavering dedication and unrelenting passion."

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari paid tribute to the soldiers who defended the country "against external aggression and made great sacrifices. This day reminds us of our unwavering national commitment to defend our sovereignty."

"Our armed forces are alert, always ready, and committed to responding to any challenge to national sovereignty and national integrity," said the president.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said, "Today, I join the entire nation in honoring the sacrifices of our soldiers and martyrs, as well as all those who have fought valiantly for Pakistan's defense."

He urged the nation to draw inspiration from martyrs and veterans to defend and rebuild Pakistan with the same spirit by "embracing the values of hard work, integrity, and compassion to chart a course towards a brighter future for our beloved Pakistan." Enditem
