NEW DELHI -- At least six people were killed in fresh violence in the northeastern state of Manipur, the state-run broadcaster All India Radio said Saturday.

According to the broadcaster, a civilian was killed Saturday in sleep at home in Nungchappi village of Jiribam district, about 229 km west of Imphal, the capital city of Manipur. (India-Violence)

HANOI -- Typhoon Yagi made landfall in northern Vietnam on Saturday afternoon, causing the deaths of four people and injuring 78 others, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said.

The fatalities include three from the coastal province of Quang Ninh, and one from the northern province of Hai Duong. Among the injured, 58 are from Quang Ninh and 20 from the port city of Hai Phong. (Vietnam-Typhoon)

PHNOM PENH -- Lightning strikes had killed 50 people in Cambodia in the first eight months of 2024, down nearly 22 percent from 64 deaths over the same period 2023, a disaster control spokesman said on Saturday.

Besides the fatalities, thunderbolts injured 43 others during the January-August period this year, said Soth Kim Kolmony, the spokesperson for the National Committee for Disaster Management. (Cambodia-Lightning Strikes-Death)

TOKYO -- An official campaigning for the leadership election of Japan's largest opposition party began on Saturday, with four contenders debating on how to work with other parties in a general election expected later in the year and bring about a change in government, local media reported.

Four members of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, including a former prime minister and two lawmakers with experience running the party, filed candidacies on the day for the Sept. 23 election, Kyodo News reported. (Japan-Opposition Party) Enditem
