ACCRA, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Mahamudu Bawumia, vice president of Ghana and candidate for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), on Monday filed his nomination to contest the country's presidential election scheduled for December at the headquarters of the Electoral Commission (EC) in the Ghanaian capital of Accra.

Bawumia, accompanied by his running mate Matthew Opoku Prempeh, general secretary of the NPP, and other party bigwigs, called for a fair and smooth process in the run-up to the general elections at the end of this year.

"I believe our prayers, behaviors as we go through the election, and our conduct will be important to ensure that this process is very peaceful at the end of the day. I believe also that we should pray for the Electoral Commission because they do a very difficult job. Whenever you go into an election, you are either going to win or lose, and usually the EC is the scapegoat for people who may not have won," said Bawumia.

He expressed confidence in the country's electoral management body, assuring that the EC will successfully manage the election and ensure a peaceful process devoid of issues. "I believe the EC will be up to the task. Historically, Ghana is in an enviable position as far as the conduct of elections is concerned," added the Ghanaian vice president.

Bawumia becomes the first presidential candidate to file his nomination ahead of the 2024 general elections.

His main contender, former President John Dramani Mahama, who is a candidate for the opposition National Democratic Congress, is also expected to file his nomination the same day later in the afternoon.

According to the EC's calendar, Ghanaians will go to the polls on Dec. 7 to elect a president and 276 members of parliament in the general elections. Enditem
