KIEV, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Ukraine is losing about 11.2 billion U.S. dollars annually due to landmine contamination, the Economy Ministry reported Wednesday, citing a recent study.

These losses are equivalent to about 5.6 percent of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) in 2021, according to the study conducted by the ministry together with Tony Blair Institute.

Ukraine incurs the biggest losses due to the reduction in agricultural exports and the decrease in local tax revenues, it said.

The Sumy and Chernihiv regions in northern Ukraine, the eastern Kharkiv region and the southern Mykolayiv region lost more than 20 percent of their GDP due to landmine contamination.

In January, the Ukrainian Economy Ministry said that 512,000 hectares of agricultural land are due to be cleared from landmines and other remnants of war planted during the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Enditem
