BISHKEK, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- The remains of a new dinosaur species have been discovered by German and Kyrgyz paleontologists in southern Kyrgyzstan, local media reported on Thursday.

"During this time, the remains of a predatory dinosaur about 8-9 meters long were found, including skull bones, dorsal and sacral vertebrae, fragments of the shoulder girdle and forelimbs, as well as an almost complete pelvic girdle and hind limbs," said Kyrgyz paleontologist Isaak Bakirov.

It took 17 years to excavate the bones of the new predatory theropod dinosaur, Alpkarakush kyrgyzicus, named after the mythological bird from a traditional Kyrgyz poem. It became the first theropod dinosaur found in Kyrgyzstan.

The fossils were extracted from the Balabansai Formation, which dates back to the Middle Jurassic period approximately 165 million years ago.

According to scientists, Alpkarakush kyrgyzicus had unique bony protrusions above the eye sockets on the skull, resembling eyebrows and features on the dorsal vertebrae and femur. Enditem
